I've had a peek at the source for IMC2, the Intermud Communication protocol, and was wondering whether to install it or not.

Pros:
- It's something else to do when the mud itself is quiet
- It could increase the overall profile of the mud

Cons:
- There's the chance it might degrade from the overall quality and 'feel' of Abandoned Codex. I'm quite pleased with the low ratio of l33tsp34k1ng k1dd1ez we've managed to keep, so am a little bit apprehensive about what we'd be letting in through our doors.

Politically speaking, it's the sort of feature that's a lot easier to put in that it is to take back out again; so I thought I'd make sure that it was definitely what people wanted before I took it any further.

Not to sound idiotic, but how exactly does it work, on an interface level? Is it like another channel on the mud that you can turn on and off?

I've never actually used it, and when I tried connecting to a few of the muds on its mudlist to get help nobody was around. :/
But from what I can tell, yeah, it's pretty much as you describe - you can get wholists of other muds and send people tells or join global chat channels.
http://imc2.intermud.us/imc2-intermud-features.php has more.

Well, from what I can tell it seems to have all the necessary features to block unwanted douchebags so I don't see too much trouble there. Assuming I'm correct in guessing they are all entirely separate channels and don't actually allow listening/talking on our own mud channels I think it might be handy to have. Might entice people to hang about more often even if other players aren't on atm. I'm okay with it if everyone else thinks it'll be worthwhile.

Go for it. If it becomes a problem and you cant get rid of it, turn the channel off by default and then if people still want to be on it, they can just turn it on.

That isn't entirely what I meant, although I probably didn't communicate it very clearly; I'm concerned about the more fundamental issue of, what do I want Abandoned Codex to be? Do I want it to be a chatroom? Do I want the kind of environment and socialisation that a chatroom environment leads to?
It does seem easy to look at it as being a clear cut "more socialisation > less socialisation", therefore "chatroom > no chatroom", but I have to consider things like, why do people mud in the first place? As you've probably gathered, I've always been fairly keen to nurture a deep and detailed in-character environment; would this be left by the wayside as people spend all their time on chat? I'd rather have a mud of 5 mudders than a mud of 20 chatters.
The question is, would IMC lead to that, or wouldn't it? Does anyone here have experience of an IMC'ed mud that could comment on the subject?

Hmm, hard to say. It would indeed be nice to have the opinion of someone who's actually used the thing. I suppose a lot of it depends on the people involved. I mean, of course the mud will become slightly more chatroom-esque but I don't think it would really hurt that much. Since only players with the channel turned on will experience the change really, and I don't think it will really detract from the IC experience anymore than having an OOC channel does.

The "mud of 20 chatters" I don't think will happen really. Sure, they may spend a good amount of time chatting, but I don't think they would get on simply to chat. They'd be playing and questing as well and the extra chat may convince them to stick around more often and wait for quests.

Personally, I don't like it when the mud is quiet. I really have a hard time keeping myself focused without other people around. That's one of the reasons I don't build as often as I would like to. I just can't stand being there with no one around to idly talk to.

I've asked on TMC for any stories from people who've installed it, and it's not looking promising. :/

Quote:
We had it installed on a MUD I played when I was still a player there, around five or six years ago. About the only practical use we found for it was starting spam/flamewars with other MUDs on the hub. It was promptly disabled, and to my knowledge never enabled again

Quote:
While at the time we all thought it was cool, it did cause alot of flame wars betweeen mud owners. My mud was a GodWars MUD, and there was a lot of bitching between admin/and players alike. Which resulted in the GW Hub getting forcably shutdown, and most muds removing IMC from their code.

Having read through the replies, perhaps we should do as suggested and add it as a privelege earned at some point, say, avatar? In general I'd say a good majority of our avatars aren't douchebags who would start spam and flamewars. Coinciding with this is the idea of the intermud chat keeping people around during low-traffic times is the fact that we're usually looking for avatars during quests, not the unknown lowbies who don't know the meaning of RP.

Seconded.

Boy, the people over in the other thread are very flame-happy...

I agree with Night ... if it goes in it shouldn't be given out until people can show a certain level of dedication to the MUD. I'm just kind of interested in seeing it first-hand ... if it's stupid I'll just disable it Smile
