How does the save vs stuff really work. like

Object 'staffoffire fire' is an armor, special properties: glow hum magic none.
Its weight is 4, value is 200000, and level is 83.
Armor class is 15.
Affects resistant by fire
Affects intelligence by 2.
Affects damage roll by 3.
Affects hp by 20.
Affects mana by 20.
Affects save vs breath by -5.

what does Affects save vs breath by -5 do? and why is the 5 negative? is a negative number better than a positive number? and what is breath anyway? and if i has something to deal with dice could you explain how? What are all the different saves? do saves just lower the chance of something happening?

Many thanks

Saving vs. poison or death
Saving vs. wands
Saving vs. paralysis or petrification (stun)
Saving vs. breath (dragon breath)
Saving vs. spells or staves

"The term 'Saving Throw' harkens back to the earliest D&D rules where a character is required to 'throw' the dice down (roll) in order to 'save' them from a bad situation." http://nwn.bioware.com/players/savingthrows.html

Is that right, because i was trying to read websites but i was getting confused because some were using different termiology. So umm can someone just explain the dice part to me then?

I'll answer anyway in case any other readers were wondering.
First off, yes, negative number is good.
Now, here's some examples of each type:

Spell/Staff protects against: Acid Blast, Blindness, Burning Hands, Charm Person, Chill Touch, Quantum Spike, and lots of others.

Poison/Death protects against: Poison (obviously), Black Hand/Fist/Lightning, and possibly some of the smaugspell-created spells

Wands protects against Weaken (for some reason), some of the smaugspell-created spells, and, uhh, possibly wands but don't quote me on that cause I can't find any reference to it in the source (likewise save versus staff working against brandished staves).

Paralysis/Petrification protects against Stun and possibly some of the smaugspell-created spells/skills.

Breath protects against Acid Breath, Fire Breath, Monkey Breath, etc.

91 skillspells in the system are smaugspells, which is just over a quarter of the number of all skillspells. I've not detailed them here because it's a bit fiddlier to sum them up than the hardcoded ones.

Spell/staff covers the largest number of things you're likely to meet, and if faced with a choice of -1 on any savingthrow it's the one I'd go for. However, the whole point of the savingthrows system is to throw a bit more of an element of skill and judgement into the choosing of equipment - a canny adventurer comes prepared with a selection of eq for anti-stun, anti-evil-casting, and anti-breath situations too.

It's Gareth's secret weapon that only he has access to. You better watch out in his next quest if you piss him off! Laughing
